Chapter 14 - A Birthday Without Cameras

One year after the party, Lily turned seven.

Claire did not rent a hall.

She did not order professional decorations.

The celebration took place in a public park.

There was one homemade cake.

Seven yellow candles.

A picnic table covered with paper unicorns Lily and Madison cut out themselves.

Hannah attended in her wheelchair.

David brought sandwiches.

He had sold his expensive car to repay part of the foundation money he had benefited from.

Claire had not fully forgiven him.

But she allowed him to show change through consistency.

No promises.

No dramatic speeches.

He attended therapy.

He built a life that did not depend on Robert’s trust.

And he stopped asking Claire to protect him from discomfort.

Madison gave Lily a silver glitter barrette.

It matched the one lost during the previous party.

Lily placed it in her hair.

“Do I look seven?”

“You look brave,” Madison said.

Lily frowned.

“I want to look seven.”

Everyone laughed.

Before she blew out the candles, Lily looked around.

“Is anybody taking pictures?”

Claire held up her phone.

“Only if you say yes.”

Lily thought about it.

“One picture.”

Claire took one photograph.

Not for a campaign.

Not for social media.

For Lily.

After cake, Hannah asked Claire whether she planned to tell Lily everything when she was older.

“Yes.”

“Even the ugly parts?”

“Especially those.”

Hannah nodded.

“Good. Secrets become powerful when children have to carry them.”

Claire looked at Lily running across the grass with Madison.

Neither girl understood inheritance trusts, charity fraud or family reputation.

They understood something simpler.

A closed door had hidden harm.

An open conversation had begun repairing it.
