Chapter 5 - What the Camera Had Captured

The paramedics transported Lily to the hospital.
Claire rode with her.
Before the ambulance doors closed, she looked through the open entrance at her parents.
Patricia stood beneath the balloons.
Robert remained beside the stairs.
David held Madison against his chest.
The birthday cake was untouched.
The celebration had become a crime scene.
At the hospital, doctors found no fracture.
Lily had a bruised cheek, mild concussion symptoms and sedative traces in her bloodstream.
Claire stared at the physician.
“Sedative?”
“A low dose. We are determining what substance.”
Lily had not been prescribed anything.
Claire called the officer.
He was already examining the upstairs room.
The camera had recorded continuously.
Robert’s claim that it was inactive was false.
The footage began with Lily sleeping.
At 2:17 p.m., the door opened.
Patricia entered.
She carried a champagne flute in one hand and a small bottle in the other.
Claire stopped breathing as the officer described what happened.
Patricia placed several drops of liquid into Lily’s water cup.
Then she moved the stuffed rabbit away from the child’s face.
Five minutes later, Robert entered.
They spoke quietly near the bed.
The audio was clear.
Patricia said, “She needs to stay asleep until the photographer leaves.”
Robert asked, “Why?”
“Because Madison is the family face.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Her mother had arranged professional photographs of the party.
But she wanted only Madison visible.
Lily’s own birthday had been transformed into a promotional event for the family charity.
Robert did not object.
He locked the door.
Then Madison entered through the connecting bathroom.
She was carrying her tablet.
Patricia followed her inside.
What happened next was not a deliberate attack.
It was worse in a different way.
Lily woke, disoriented from the sedative.
She tried to stand.
Patricia grabbed her arm and ordered her back into bed.
Lily pulled away.
She stumbled into the wooden nightstand.
Her cheek struck the edge.
Patricia froze.
Robert moved toward the child.
But instead of calling for help, Patricia whispered:
“No ambulance. Not with the photographer downstairs.”
Robert agreed.
They placed Lily back in bed.

Locked the door.
And returned to the party.
