Chapter 13 - Patricia’s Final Defense
Patricia refused a plea agreement.
She believed a jury would understand her.
She arrived at court in a cream suit and pearl earrings.
The same polished image she wore at foundation events.
Her attorney described her as a devoted grandmother who made one poor decision during a stressful party.
Then Claire testified.
She did not call Patricia evil.
She described the facts.
Her daughter asleep.
The drugged water.
The locked door.
The delayed medical care.
The sentence about a “real granddaughter.”
The prosecutor asked:
“Why do you believe your mother excluded Lily?”
“Because Lily could not be controlled into representing the family image she wanted.”
Patricia shook her head from the defense table.
Claire continued.
“My mother did not see children as people. She saw them as evidence that she had succeeded.”
David testified next.
Then Madison’s recorded forensic interview was played privately for the jury.
Robert accepted a plea before his testimony.
He admitted locking the door and stopping Madison’s emergency call.
In exchange for a reduced sentence, he testified against Patricia.
She stared at him with hatred.
“You weak coward,” she whispered as he passed.
Robert stopped.
“For once, yes.”
Then he continued to the witness stand.
He explained how Patricia planned the photo session.
How she gave Lily the sedative.
How he chose to help conceal the injury.
He did not blame his wife for his decisions.
That mattered.
But not enough to erase them.
The jury convicted Patricia on every major count.
She received a prison sentence and was permanently barred from managing charitable funds or having unsupervised contact with Lily and Madison.
Robert received a shorter sentence because of cooperation.
When the judge asked whether he wished to speak, he looked at Claire.
“I spent my life avoiding conflict and called it keeping the family together.”
