Chapter 1 - The Door That Moved

The bedroom handle turned from the inside.

Officer Natalie Reed froze in the dark hallway, one hand near her holster and the other holding seven-year-old Ashley behind her.

Rain hammered the windows.

The house lights flickered.

Ashley clutched a stuffed puppy against her chest and whispered, “That’s not my daddy.”

Natalie looked down at her.

Ten minutes earlier, Ashley had called 911 from beneath the kitchen table.

“Please hurry,” she had whispered. “Daddy told me never to open that door.”

When Natalie arrived, the front door had been unlocked.

Dinner sat untouched on the kitchen table.

A bottle of children’s medicine stood beside a handwritten note.

Take one spoonful. Stay downstairs. Do not answer the bedroom door.

The note was signed Andrew.

But Ashley had shaken her head.

“My daddy didn’t write that.”

Now the locked bedroom door moved again.

A faint scraping sound came from the other side.

Natalie raised her flashlight.

“Police. Who is in there?”

Silence.

Then a voice whispered from inside.

“Ashley?”

The little girl buried her face against Natalie’s sleeve.

“That voice keeps pretending.”

Natalie’s skin tightened.

“Pretending to be who?”

Ashley looked toward the family photo on the hallway table.

Andrew smiled in the picture, one arm around his daughter.

“My daddy.”

Natalie ordered Ashley to stay behind the wall.

She reached for the doorknob.

Before she touched it, three slow knocks sounded from inside.

Ashley began crying.

Natalie looked at the note again.

The handwriting looked rushed.

The final word had been pressed so hard the pen tore the paper.

Then Natalie noticed something hidden beneath the note.

A tiny drop of dried blood.

The voice returned.

This time it sounded exactly like Andrew.

“Natalie, don’t open the door.”

Her hand stopped.

Ashley stared at her.

“How does it know your name?”

👉 Natalie had never met Andrew before that night, but the person behind the door knew exactly who she was.
