Chapter 17 - Andrew’s Secret
Natalie confronted Andrew at the hospital.
He did not deny giving Ashley the medicine.
“I was trying to make her sleep.”
“With an unmarked sedative?”
“I knew Claire was coming.”
Andrew had received a threat that afternoon.
Claire promised violence if Ashley remained awake during the search.
He believed sedation would keep the child hidden and quiet.
Instead, Claire replaced the dose with something stronger.
“You endangered her,” Natalie said.
“I know.”
Andrew’s fear had driven him into the same pattern as everyone else.
Control the child.
Hide the truth.
Make decisions without her.
Sarah was furious.
She petitioned for temporary custody.
Andrew fought back.
Ashley listened as adults argued over where she belonged.
Finally, she shouted, “Stop talking like I’m a box!”
The room fell silent.
Ashley asked to speak with the judge herself.
At the custody hearing, she held her stuffed puppy.
“I love Daddy Andrew,” she said. “But he lied to me.”
Andrew cried.
Ashley looked at Sarah.
“I want to know my birth mom. But I don’t want strangers deciding everything fast.”
The judge appointed an independent child advocate.
Ashley would remain temporarily with a licensed foster family near both parents while therapy and evaluations continued.
Neither Andrew nor Sarah was pleased.
But both accepted it.
That choice protected Ashley from becoming another prize in an adult battle.
Andrew pleaded guilty to child endangerment and obstruction for hiding the adoption records.
He received probation, mandatory therapy, and supervised contact.
His cooperation helped convict Claire.
Sarah began building a relationship with Ashley slowly.
No forced hugs.
No demands to call her Mom.
Just time.
Then federal agents arrested Evelyn.
Before being taken away, she told Sarah, “I did what I thought was necessary.”
