Chapter 4 - The Man in the Pantry
Natalie aimed at the pantry door.
“Police. Show me your hands.”
The door opened slowly.
A man collapsed onto the kitchen floor.
His wrists were bound.
Blood covered the side of his face.
Ashley screamed.
“Daddy!”
Natalie rushed forward.
The man matched Andrew’s photograph.
He was alive.
Barely.
Natalie cut the cord around his wrists.
Andrew grabbed her sleeve.
“Did she take the medicine?”
“Yes.”
His face filled with panic.
“That wasn’t medicine.”
“What was it?”
“A sedative. She wanted Ashley unconscious.”
“Who?”
Andrew looked toward the hidden passage behind the pantry shelves.
“My wife.”
Natalie stared at him.
“Ashley said her mother is dead.”
“I told her that because I believed it.”
Andrew’s wife, Claire, had disappeared five years earlier after being declared dead in a boating accident.
No body had been recovered.
Andrew later discovered Claire had been using a false identity and hiding financial crimes connected to wealthy families in Austin.
Three weeks ago, he received a photograph of Claire standing outside Ashley’s school.
“She wanted something from this house,” Andrew said.
“What?”
“A file.”
The lights flickered again.
Andrew’s eyes widened.
“She’s still here.”
A woman’s voice came through the wall.
“You always were terrible at keeping secrets.”
Ashley grabbed Natalie.
The hidden panel behind the pantry slammed shut.
Then smoke began pouring from the vents.
Andrew tried to stand.
“She’s burning the evidence.”
Natalie looked for an exit.
The front door would not open.
The deadbolt had locked electronically.
Through the living-room window, the black sedan across the street started its engine.
Claire was not alone.
Andrew crawled toward the family photo.
“Behind the picture,” he gasped.
Natalie pulled the frame from the wall.
A small metal key fell out.
On it was engraved one word.

👉 Andrew had hidden the key for years, but Claire was willing to burn the house down to stop Natalie from learning what it opened.
