Chapter 5 - The Mercy Box

Natalie broke the kitchen window with a chair.

Cold rain rushed inside.

She lifted Ashley through first.

Then she helped Andrew climb out.

They reached the backyard as smoke filled the house.

No flames were visible yet.

Only thick gray vapor.

Andrew coughed violently.

“It’s chemical smoke. She uses it to force people out.”

Natalie guided them toward her patrol car.

The tires had been slashed.

The radio antenna had been cut.

The black sedan drove away from the front street.

Natalie memorized the plate.

Partial only.

Inside her pocket, the key marked MERCY felt heavy.

“What does it open?” she asked.

Andrew looked toward Ashley.

“A safe-deposit box.”

“What’s inside?”

“Proof Claire is still alive. And proof she’s not working alone.”

Ashley leaned against Natalie, barely awake.

Andrew explained that Claire had once worked for a private adoption agency.

The agency targeted vulnerable parents, altered medical records, and sold children through illegal placements.

Andrew discovered Claire had been using Ashley’s identity in sealed documents.

“She wanted to take her back,” he said.

“Why?”

“Because Ashley isn’t our biological daughter.”

Natalie looked at the child.

Ashley had heard.

Her eyes filled with confusion.

Andrew reached for her.

“You are my daughter. Nothing changes that.”

Before he could say more, headlights appeared beyond the trees.

A second police cruiser entered the street.

Natalie felt relief.

Then she recognized the driver.

Sergeant Paul Mercer.

Her supervisor.

Andrew’s face went white.

“That’s the man from the adoption files.”

Mercer stepped out slowly.

He did not call for backup.

He did not ask if they were safe.

He looked directly at Natalie’s pocket.

“Give me the key.”

👉 Natalie’s own supervisor had come for the evidence, proving the conspiracy reached inside her department.
