Chapter 18 - The Trial of the Network
The federal trial lasted four months.
Claire sat calmly at the defense table.
Judge Price looked smaller without his robe.
Mercer avoided Natalie’s eyes.
Evelyn cried throughout jury selection.
The prosecution presented the Mercy files, Thomas Monroe’s recordings, the hospital fraud, the hidden identities, and the master server.
Sarah testified about being told her baby had died.
Helen testified about Emma.
Evan described twelve years without his real name.
Emma explained how Judge Price kept her medicated and isolated.
Andrew admitted his lies.
Then Ashley entered the courtroom.
The judge allowed her recorded statement to play instead of forcing her to testify in person.
On screen, she held her stuffed puppy.
“I was scared because grown-ups kept saying they were protecting me while hiding things from me,” she said. “I want them to stop doing that to other kids.”
Several jurors cried.
Claire was convicted of kidnapping, child trafficking, fraud, attempted murder, and conspiracy.
Judge Price was convicted on more than thirty counts.
Mercer was convicted of corruption, kidnapping, attempted murder, and obstruction.
Evelyn was convicted of conspiracy and kidnapping.
Michael Price received twenty-eight years.
Claire received life without parole.
Judge Price received seventy years.
Mercer received fifty-two.
Evelyn received eighteen.
The court seized millions in hidden assets.
The money funded victim searches, therapy, legal aid, and DNA testing.
After sentencing, Claire looked at Natalie.
“You think prison ends this?”
Natalie replied, “No. Truth does.”
Outside, families held photographs of missing children.
Some had already been reunited.
Others were still waiting.
Ashley walked between Sarah and her foster mother.
Andrew followed at a respectful distance.
