Chapter 12 - The Grandmother’s Lie
Evelyn Monroe arrived in Austin pretending to comfort Sarah.
She hugged her daughter.
She cried over Ashley.
She condemned Thomas as a controlling father.
Then Natalie placed the ledger on the table.
Evelyn’s face changed.
Sarah stared at the signature.
“Mom?”
Evelyn denied it.
A handwriting expert confirmed the signature was hers.
Evan produced bank records showing she paid Claire through three shell accounts.
Finally, Evelyn confessed.
Ashley’s biological father was not a criminal or an outsider.
He was Michael Price.
Judge Calvin Price’s son.
Michael and Sarah had been secretly dating.
When Sarah became pregnant, Evelyn feared scandal and believed the Price family would use the baby to gain control of Monroe Aerospace.
She arranged the infant’s disappearance.
“I thought I was protecting you,” Evelyn said.
Sarah slapped her.
“You let me think my baby was dead.”
Evelyn began crying.
“I never knew Claire would sell her.”
“You never asked.”
Judge Price later learned Ashley had survived.
He spent years helping Mercer hide the crime while waiting for Thomas to die.
Now he intended to control Ashley’s inheritance through his son’s paternity claim.
But Michael Price had died five years earlier.
Or so everyone believed.
Evan revealed a recent photograph.
Michael was alive in Canada under a different name.
Judge Price had faked his son’s death to protect him from financial-crime charges.
Ashley’s father had been hiding while Sarah searched for their child.
Sarah looked at the photograph with fury.
“He knew?”
Evan nodded.
“Three years ago, he learned Ashley was alive.”
“And he did nothing?”
“He was waiting for the estate.”
A message suddenly appeared on Evan’s tablet.
VIDEO CALL INCOMING.
Michael Price appeared on screen.
Behind him, Andrew sat tied to a chair.
