Chapter 7 - The Child in the File
Natalie kept her weapon trained on Mercer.
Claire held the remote.
Andrew held Ashley.
No one moved.
Then Ashley dropped her stuffed puppy.
It landed in a puddle.
The child cried out and bent toward it.
Claire’s eyes followed her.
Natalie used the distraction.
She fired at the remote.
The bullet struck Claire’s hand.
The device fell into the grass.
Mercer tackled Natalie.
Andrew grabbed the remote.
Claire ran toward the sedan.
Natalie drove her elbow into Mercer’s face and broke free.
Sirens sounded in the distance.
A neighbor had finally called 911 after hearing the shot.
Mercer fled into the trees.
Claire escaped in the sedan.
But Natalie recovered the remote before the timer reached zero.
Bomb technicians later determined the house had not been fully rigged.
Claire had been bluffing.
Mostly.
The chemical system inside could still have killed anyone trapped there.
At the hospital, Ashley was treated for sedative exposure.
Andrew received stitches and remained under guard.
Natalie gave the Mercy key to Detective Lena Ortiz from internal affairs.
They opened the safe-deposit box before dawn.
Inside were adoption records, photographs, audio tapes, and a birth certificate.
Ashley’s original name was Lily Grace Monroe.
Her biological mother was a nineteen-year-old woman named Sarah Monroe.
Sarah had reported her newborn missing seven years earlier.
The adoption agency claimed the baby died after birth.
The death certificate was signed by Claire.
Natalie felt sick.
Andrew stared at the documents.
“I didn’t know.”
He and Claire had been told Ashley’s mother voluntarily surrendered her.
Andrew discovered the truth only after Claire vanished.
He kept it secret because he feared losing Ashley.
Then Ortiz played an audio recording.
Claire’s voice said, “The Monroe baby is worth more alive. Her grandfather will pay anything.”
Natalie looked at Ashley through the hospital glass.
Her biological family had money.
