Chapter 9 - The Needle in the Hallway
Natalie ran toward Ashley’s room.
Mercer appeared at the far end of the corridor wearing surgical scrubs.
He pushed a medication cart.
No one else recognized him.
Natalie did.
“Stop!”
Mercer abandoned the cart and ran.
Natalie chased him through the pediatric wing.
He turned into a stairwell.
She followed.
On the landing, he attacked her with a syringe.
Natalie blocked his wrist.
The needle missed her neck by inches.
They struggled against the railing.
Mercer hissed, “You have no idea who owns this department.”
Natalie slammed his hand against the wall until the syringe fell.
“What was in it?”
“Enough to make Ashley’s death look natural.”
Natalie struck him again.
He kicked her knee and escaped through a lower exit.
Security sealed the hospital.
Inside the medical bag, investigators found sedatives, false credentials, and a transfer order moving Ashley to a private clinic.
The order carried a judge’s signature.
Judge Calvin Price.
Thomas Monroe’s former attorney.
Sarah recognized the name.
“He handled my father’s estate.”
Ortiz checked the will.
Judge Price would control Ashley’s trust if Sarah were declared unfit and Andrew lost custody.
Mercer was not protecting Claire.
He was protecting the judge.
Then a nurse found a small recorder taped beneath Ashley’s bed.
It contained a fresh message.
Claire’s voice said, “Natalie, if you want the truth about your brother, come alone.”
Natalie stopped breathing.
Her younger brother, Evan, had vanished twelve years earlier.
The case was never solved.
Mercer had been the lead detective.
Ashley looked at Natalie.
“Is she talking about your family?”
Natalie nodded slowly.
Claire had not chosen her by accident.
