Chapter 10 - The Coffee Ring

Ryker examined the photographed records on Marco’s tablet.
Three pages carried Daniel’s handwritten signature.
Each signature was genuine.
But every page had a pale brown curve near the lower corner.
A partial coffee ring.
Ryker remembered Daniel’s habits.
He never drank coffee.
He hated the smell and kept peppermint tea beside him during every meeting.
Vanessa drank double espresso and left cups everywhere.
Ryker enlarged the image.
The stain passed beneath one signature but over another line of printed text.
The signatures had not been written on those documents.
They had been transferred from previously signed pages using a physical cut-and-copy process, then scanned.
Old-fashioned.
Crude.
But effective enough to survive a quick electronic review.
Ryker looked at Vanessa.
“You forged Daniel’s authorization using signed pages from another document.”
Vanessa folded her arms.
“That is a fantasy.”
“The coffee stains overlap the printing inconsistently.”
“Then your friend spilled something.”
“Daniel didn’t drink coffee.”
Silence.
Marco’s phone vibrated.
Ryker’s attorney had contacted the bank’s fraud department. The accounts connected to Vanessa and Pike had received millions from Steel-Cole through layered transfers.
Most of the money remained frozen because Daniel had placed an emergency hold shortly before his death.
But one account was scheduled to release funds that afternoon unless the trustees filed a formal fraud objection.
Vanessa’s flight to Zurich would have placed her near the bank processing the release.
Ryker finally understood the urgency.
She was not merely running.
She was racing a deadline.
“You expected to land before the objection could be filed,” he said.
Vanessa said nothing.
“You left the children here because traveling with them would trigger the guardianship restriction.”
Still nothing.
“You told them someone was coming so they wouldn’t follow you through the door.”
Her composure fractured.
“They were supposed to sit quietly for twenty minutes.”
Lily recoiled.
Ryker’s expression turned to stone.
“And after twenty minutes?”
Vanessa looked away.
The answer was obvious.
Nobody had been coming.
Airport staff might eventually have found them.
Or they might have wandered.
Or followed a stranger.

Vanessa had accepted every possibility as long as she boarded her flight.
👉 Vanessa finally admitted she had abandoned the twins—but her next confession suggested Daniel’s fatal crash was no accident.
