Chapter 13 - The Message That Broke Her
The prepaid phone was recovered in a clear evidence bag.
Airport personnel did not unlock it.
They did not need to.
A notification still glowed across the screen.
AARON: BOARD NOW. ONCE THE FUNDS CLEAR, WE FINISH WHAT WE STARTED WITH DANIEL.
Vanessa stared at the message.
Her shoulders dropped.
For the first time, she no longer looked polished or powerful.
She looked cornered.
Ryker read the message twice.
It did not prove exactly what had happened to Daniel.
But it linked Vanessa, Pike, the stolen money, and Daniel’s death in one sentence.
Marco stepped away to contact federal investigators and local authorities.
Vanessa whispered, “Aaron is manipulating you.”
“Through your phone?” Ryker asked.
“He sent that without my knowledge.”
“You carried a secret phone to the airport.”
“He gave it to me.”
“Why?”
She pressed her lips together.
Ryker crouched so his eyes were level with hers.
“Daniel trusted you with his children.”
Vanessa’s face twisted.
“Daniel never trusted me. He watched me. He tracked every dollar I spent. He treated me like a guest in my own home.”
“He discovered you were stealing.”
“He had everything!” she snapped. “The company. The respect. The children adored him. Even you came before me.”
Her jealousy spilled out faster than she could contain it.
“I was his wife, but every decision began with ‘What will Ryker think?’ Every plan had to protect the twins. Every account belonged to some future version of their lives.”
Ryker stared at her.
“So you helped Pike steal from him.”
“I deserved security.”
“You had security.”
“I wanted something that was mine.”
Lily heard the words.
“Were we not yours?”
Vanessa turned.
The question struck harder than any accusation.
For one second, shame appeared on her face.
Then it vanished.
“No,” she said. “You were always Daniel’s.”
Owen began to cry without making a sound.
Ryker stood and moved directly between them.
“You will never speak to them again.”
Vanessa looked up at him.
“You can’t promise that.”
Ryker reached for the notarized document displayed on Marco’s tablet.
