Chapter 12 - The Voice Above Gate 17
The airport supervisor requested an immediate review of Gate 17 surveillance.
Vanessa protested.
“You need a warrant.”
The supervisor replied, “We are reviewing footage of an incident involving unattended minors on airport property.”
Minutes later, a secure tablet displayed the concourse from a ceiling camera.
The recording began eight minutes before Ryker dropped his bag.
Vanessa sat beside the twins.
She checked her watch repeatedly.
Lily appeared to ask a question.
Vanessa leaned close to her.
The camera’s directional microphone had captured the words.
“Stay in those seats. If you follow me, they’ll separate you forever.”
Lily’s recorded voice trembled.
“Who’s coming for us?”
Vanessa answered, “Nobody you know.”
Then she stood and walked toward the jet bridge.
Owen reached for her suitcase.
She kicked it away from his hand.
Not hard enough to injure him.
Hard enough to frighten him.
The live Lily hid her face against Ryker’s coat.
Owen stared at the floor.
Vanessa looked around at the people watching the footage.
“It sounds worse without context.”
Ryker’s restraint nearly broke.
“Give me the context in which threatening abandoned five-year-olds becomes acceptable.”
She said nothing.
The footage continued.
Lily followed Vanessa and caught her sleeve.
Vanessa ripped free.
Then Ryker entered the frame.
The supervisor paused the recording.
“That is sufficient to establish intentional abandonment for our incident report.”
Marco’s phone rang.
He stepped aside, listened, and returned.
“The bank has frozen the release. The fraud objection was accepted.”
Vanessa’s face collapsed.
The money was gone.
Her flight was stopped.
The twins were no longer silent witnesses she controlled.
Every reason she had come to the airport had failed within fifteen minutes.
But Ryker noticed something else in the footage.
Before Vanessa approached the jet bridge, she removed a small object from her purse and pushed it into a trash bin.
“Rewind,” he said.
The supervisor enlarged the frame.
It was a prepaid phone.
Marco immediately asked airport staff to secure the bin.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Ryker understood.
She had discarded the phone because it connected her to someone waiting beyond the airport.
