Chapter 15 - The Brother Daniel Never Named
Ryker stared at Vanessa.
“What did you say?”
She stood slowly.
“You and Daniel shared a father.”
Ryker’s first instinct was disbelief.
Daniel had been raised in Wisconsin by loving parents. Ryker had grown up in foster homes after his mother died and his father vanished.
They had met in college.
At least, that was what Ryker had always believed.
Vanessa laughed at his expression.
“Daniel discovered it when he ordered genetic testing for the twins. He thought Owen might have inherited a heart condition from his biological family.”
Ryker looked at Owen.
Vanessa continued.
“The database produced a close-family match. You.”
Ryker felt the floor shift beneath him.
“Daniel confronted his father. The old man admitted he had another son before his marriage.”
Ryker’s voice was barely audible.
“Me.”
“He wanted to tell you,” Vanessa said. “Then he learned about the theft and decided he couldn’t risk bringing you closer until he knew whom to trust.”
Lily looked between them.
“Does that mean Mr. Ryker is our uncle?”
Vanessa’s smile sharpened.
“It means your father lied to him his entire life.”
Ryker absorbed the pain without letting it control him.
Daniel had hidden the truth.
But he had also left a video, a guardianship order, and every piece needed to protect the children.
Ryker turned to Lily.
“Yes,” he said. “It means I’m your uncle.”
Owen’s face crumpled with relief.
He stepped forward and wrapped one arm around Ryker’s neck, still holding the teddy bear with the other.
Ryker froze.
Then carefully held him.
Lily joined them.
For the first time since the jet bridge door closed, both children allowed themselves to cry.
Vanessa watched, furious that her revelation had not destroyed him.
Instead, it had given the twins something she had tried to erase.
Family.
Marco approached quietly.
“Authorities are here. They found Aaron Pike attempting to cross into Canada. His vehicle contained financial records and equipment matching the tampering documented in Daniel’s SUV investigation.”
Vanessa’s knees weakened.
