Chapter 8 - Daniel’s Last Warning
Ryker’s attorney opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter and a notarized legal document.
Ryker recognized Daniel’s sharp, slanted handwriting immediately.
His attorney began reading.
“Ryker, if you are seeing this, I waited too long to trust you.”
Ryker lowered his eyes.
The words felt like Daniel’s voice returning from a locked room.
The letter explained that Daniel had discovered Aaron Pike’s theft months earlier.
Pike had not acted alone.
Someone had used Daniel’s home computer, copied his electronic signature, and authorized fraudulent transfers through a family trust.
Daniel suspected Vanessa.
But he had not confronted her immediately because the twins were living under the same roof.
He feared she would take them and disappear.
The document beneath the letter was an emergency guardianship nomination.
If Daniel died or became incapacitated while Vanessa was under investigation for financial misconduct, Ryker was to receive temporary custody of Lily and Owen until a court reviewed the evidence.
Vanessa stood abruptly.
“That document is invalid.”
Ryker looked at her.
“You knew it existed.”
“It was signed under pressure.”
“Whose pressure?”
“Yours.”
“I didn’t know about it.”
“That’s convenient.”
The attorney continued.
Daniel had also placed a substantial portion of his shares into a protected trust for the twins.
Vanessa could access living expenses while caring for them.
But if she abandoned them, surrendered guardianship, or removed them from Illinois without authorization, her access would terminate immediately.
Control would pass to the nominated trustee.
Ryker Steel.
The reason for Vanessa’s one-way flight became clear.
She had likely learned the guardianship review was about to begin.
If she escaped before being formally served, she might transfer whatever money remained beyond reach.
Ryker looked at her suitcase.
“You weren’t abandoning them because they were inconvenient.”
Vanessa’s lips pressed into a thin line.
“You were abandoning them because keeping them made you legally accountable.”
Lily stared at the floor.
“Did she only keep us for money?”
Ryker turned toward her.
Before he could answer, Owen whispered, “Daddy said she wanted the red folder.”
On the video call, Ryker’s attorney froze.
