Chapter 1 - The Hand She Tore Away

“Let go of me.”

Vanessa Cole ripped her beige sleeve from the little girl’s hand so violently that five-year-old Lily stumbled against the row of black airport chairs.

The boarding door at Gate 17 was already closing.

Vanessa snapped her designer suitcase upright and hurried into the jet bridge without looking back.

“Please,” Lily whispered.

Her twin brother, Owen, pressed a worn teddy bear against his chest. He did not cry. He only curled into himself, as though becoming smaller might make the fear hurt less.

Their stepmother disappeared behind the heavy door.

Lily’s hand remained suspended in the air.

Twenty feet away, Ryker Steel dropped his leather travel bag.

It struck the carpet with a heavy thud and slid beneath an empty chair.

Ryker had spent fifteen years entering rooms where men twice his age stopped talking when he appeared. He had negotiated hostile acquisitions, exposed embezzlement, and stared down executives who thought money made them untouchable.

But the sight of those children made something colder than anger move through him.

Neither child had luggage.

Neither child had a boarding pass.

And no adult was moving toward them.

Ryker crossed the concourse in long, controlled strides.

The jet bridge door was inches from sealing when he planted his palm against it.

The metal jolted against his hand.

Vanessa stopped inside the doorway and turned, irritation flashing across her polished face.

“Excuse me?”

Ryker positioned himself between her and the twins.

Behind him, his security chief, Marco, quietly moved toward the scanner.

Ryker’s voice was low enough that Vanessa had to listen carefully.

“Step away from that plane.”

Vanessa stared at his expensive coat, his watch, and the two suited men behind him.

Then she smiled.

Not nervously.

Contemptuously.

“You have no idea what you’re interfering with.”

Ryker glanced back at the silent twins.

May you like

“No,” he said. “But I’m about to.”

👉 Vanessa believed the children had nobody left—but one detail on Owen’s teddy bear was about to make Ryker’s blood run cold.
