Chapter 11 - The Night Daniel Died

“I didn’t kill him.”
Vanessa said it before anyone accused her.
The words changed the air.
Ryker stared at her.
Marco stopped typing.
Even the airport supervisor looked up.
Vanessa realized too late what she had done.
Ryker spoke carefully.
“Why would you need to say that?”
Her eyes darted toward the jet bridge.
“Because that’s what all of you are implying.”
“No one mentioned murder.”
“You keep talking about his death.”
“You met Aaron Pike six hours before Daniel’s vehicle left the road.”
Vanessa’s throat moved as she swallowed.
“It was an accident.”
Ryker took one step closer.
“Police never released the exact location of the crash to the public. Yet at the funeral, you told me Daniel must have lost control near the north curve.”
Vanessa’s face went still.
Ryker remembered it clearly now.
He had been too shocked to question the detail.
The official report had not been completed until two days later.
“How did you know where he crashed?”
Vanessa looked toward the twins.
Ryker immediately moved so they could not see her face.
“Answer me.”
“I spoke to an officer.”
“Which officer?”
“I don’t remember.”
Marco’s phone buzzed again.
He read the message, then looked at Ryker.
“The vehicle’s event recorder was preserved by the insurance company. Daniel’s brakes were applied repeatedly before the curve, but the system registered no hydraulic response.”
Ryker felt cold spread through his chest.
“Brake failure?”
“Possibly.”
Vanessa shook her head too quickly.
“Old vehicles fail.”
“Daniel’s SUV was six months old.”
Marco continued.
“Maintenance records show Aaron Pike’s brother-in-law serviced it privately the day before the crash.”
Vanessa sat down.
Her legs seemed unable to hold her.
Ryker did not feel triumph.
He felt Daniel’s absence like a physical wound.
Lily tugged his coat.
“Did she hurt Daddy?”
Ryker turned to her.
He refused to give a child an answer he could not prove.
“I don’t know yet.”
Vanessa laughed weakly.
“You’ll never prove anything.”
Ryker looked at Marco.
“Maybe not from the car.”
Then he glanced toward the airport cameras above Gate 17.
May you like
“But you just gave us a confession to something else.”
👉 Vanessa thought airport cameras had only recorded her leaving—but one microphone had captured the threat she whispered to Lily before Ryker arrived.
