Chapter 16 - The Recording from the Garage

Investigators did not question Vanessa in front of the children.

They moved her to a private airport office while Ryker remained near Gate 17 with Lily and Owen.

But before she left, Marco received a file recovered from Daniel’s cloud account.

The photograph from the parking garage had been captured by Daniel’s phone.

The phone had also recorded audio.

Daniel’s voice came first.

“I froze the accounts.”

Aaron Pike answered, “Then unfreeze them.”

Vanessa spoke next.

“You promised nobody would know.”

Daniel sounded devastated.

“You used my children’s trust.”

“It was supposed to be temporary,” Vanessa said.

Aaron interrupted.

“We’re past explanations.”

There was a scrape of shoes against concrete.

Daniel’s voice became clearer.

“If anything happens to me, Ryker gets everything.”

Vanessa laughed.

“Ryker thinks you hate him.”

“I made him think that to keep him away from you.”

The recording continued.

Daniel accused Pike of accessing the SUV through a private maintenance shop.

Pike warned Daniel not to drive north the following morning.

Then Vanessa said the sentence that ended every remaining doubt.

“You should have signed the release. Now Aaron has to make sure you don’t reach the bank.”

The recording stopped abruptly.

Vanessa’s face became bloodless.

She looked toward the exit as though escape were still possible.

It was not.

Investigators placed her in handcuffs outside the twins’ sight.

Aaron Pike later confessed that he had ordered the brake line damaged to frighten Daniel into compliance.

He claimed he never intended the vehicle to crash.

Vanessa had known about the plan and allowed Daniel to drive anyway.

She had then lied to police, concealed evidence, forged financial documents, and retained custody of the twins to access their trust.

When the account freeze was about to become permanent, she planned to flee.

The children were the final obstacle.

So she left them at Gate 17.

Not because she had nowhere to take them.

Because she believed nobody important would notice.

She had been wrong.

👉 Vanessa’s crimes were exposed, but Ryker still had to face a judge who questioned whether a man with no family life could raise two traumatized children.
