Chapter 6 - The Woman Behind the Smile

Airport security escorted Vanessa away from the jet bridge, but she was not placed under arrest.

Not yet.

Ryker insisted the twins remain where they could see him.

He did not want uniforms surrounding them or strangers asking aggressive questions.

A supervisor brought water, crackers, and two airline blankets.

Owen refused to release his teddy bear.

Lily refused to let go of the key.

Vanessa sat twenty feet away under observation, furious but composed.

“You’re making a spectacle,” she told Ryker.

“You abandoned two children beside a boarding gate.”

“I arranged care.”

“With a dead woman?”

Vanessa leaned back.

“You have no proof I knew she was dead.”

Ryker almost admired the speed with which she rebuilt her defenses.

Almost.

Marco returned from a call.

“Your office located Daniel’s wall safe,” he said quietly. “It hasn’t been opened. Vanessa’s people tried to remove it from the building six months ago, but the property manager refused without authorization.”

Vanessa’s jaw clenched.

Ryker watched her reaction.

“What’s inside?” he asked.

“I don’t know.”

Lily looked at Vanessa.

“Yes, you do.”

The woman turned sharply.

Lily shrank back, but continued speaking.

“You made Daddy open it.”

Vanessa stood.

“That is enough.”

Ryker rose at the same moment.

Every person near the gate felt the shift.

Vanessa stopped.

Lily’s breath came in quick, shallow pulls.

Ryker crouched beside her.

“You’re safe.”

Lily looked at his watch.

“Daddy put papers in the box. She wanted them. They yelled.”

“When?”

“The night before he went away.”

Ryker’s stomach tightened.

Daniel had died the following morning.

Owen buried his face in the teddy bear.

“She broke Daddy’s phone,” he whispered.

Vanessa’s polished calm finally cracked.

“They are five years old. Their memories are unreliable.”

“Then you shouldn’t be afraid of what they remember,” Ryker said.

Vanessa’s eyes hardened.

“I’m not afraid of children.”

Ryker glanced at the suitcase beside her.

“No. You’re afraid of that key.”

👉 When Ryker’s team opened Daniel’s hidden box, they found no will—only a photograph that proved Vanessa had lied about the night he died.
