Chapter 14 - The Promise Ryker Never Knew

Daniel’s safe contained one more encrypted file on the flash drive.
The password was not a company code.
It was the date Ryker and Daniel had first opened their tiny office above the mechanic’s shop.
The file unlocked immediately.
Daniel appeared on screen, seated behind his desk.
He looked tired.
But calm.
“If you’re watching this, something happened before I could fix it.”
Ryker’s chest tightened.
Daniel explained that he had begun documenting Vanessa and Aaron Pike after discovering the fraudulent transfers.
He had also recorded a personal statement regarding the twins.
“Ryker, I know you think you’re not built for family.”
A faint smile crossed Daniel’s face.
“You think because your own father left, you’ll eventually fail anyone who depends on you.”
Ryker looked away from the screen.
No one else at the gate knew that history.
Daniel had.
“But Lily listens when I tell stories about you,” Daniel continued. “Owen carries the bear you gave him everywhere. They already know you as the man who never breaks a promise.”
Lily stepped closer to Ryker.
Daniel’s recorded voice softened.
“If Vanessa is innocent, protect her too. But if I’m right, do not let guilt make you hesitate. Those children will need someone who stays.”
Ryker closed his eyes briefly.
His final argument with Daniel had not been a rejection.
Daniel had been trying to keep him distant until the evidence was secure.
Trying to protect everyone.
The video ended with Daniel placing his hand on the same red folder later hidden inside Owen’s bear.
“I’m sorry I didn’t trust you sooner.”
Silence followed.
Lily touched Ryker’s hand.
“Daddy said you would come.”
Ryker lowered himself beside her.
“I should have come sooner.”
“You didn’t know.”
“No,” he said, his voice roughening. “But I’m here now.”
Owen looked up.
“Are you leaving?”
Ryker answered without hesitation.
“No.”
Across the gate, Vanessa watched them with an expression that had transformed from contempt into hatred.
Then she smiled faintly.
“You still don’t understand,” she said. “Daniel didn’t choose you because he trusted you.”
Ryker turned.
May you like
“He chose you because you’re the twins’ only living blood relative.”
👉 Vanessa’s final attempt to wound Ryker uncovered a family secret Daniel had hidden for thirty-eight years.
