Chapter 17 - The Question in Court
Three weeks later, Ryker entered a Cook County courtroom with Lily holding one hand and Owen holding the other.
Temporary guardianship had kept them together.
Permanent custody required more.
Vanessa’s attorney argued that Ryker worked constantly, traveled internationally, and had never raised a child.
“He is a businessman,” the attorney said. “Not a parent.”
Ryker did not deny it.
He had converted part of his home into two bedrooms. He had hired a trauma-informed nanny and adjusted his schedule. He attended counseling sessions with the twins and learned which night-light helped Owen sleep.
But he also knew money and preparation did not automatically make someone a family.
The judge looked at him.
“Mr. Steel, why should this court believe you will remain committed when the immediate crisis has passed?”
Ryker glanced at Lily and Owen.
Then he answered honestly.
“Because someone once left me too.”
The courtroom became quiet.
“My father disappeared before I could remember his face. I spent years believing being unwanted was something a child could cause.”
He looked at the twins.
“It isn’t.”
Lily squeezed his fingers.
Ryker continued.
“I cannot promise I will know what to do every day. I can promise they will never wake up wondering whether I chose to leave.”
The judge reviewed Daniel’s nomination, Ryker’s biological relationship, the therapists’ recommendations, and the children’s wishes.
Then she asked Lily where she wanted to live.
Lily looked at Ryker.
“With Uncle Ryker.”
Owen lifted his teddy bear.
“Daddy picked him.”
The judge granted permanent guardianship, with adoption proceedings permitted after the required period.
Ryker’s controlled expression finally broke.
He bent his head as Lily wrapped her arms around him.
Across the aisle, Vanessa sat in custody awaiting trial.
She looked smaller than she had at the airport.
Not because her expensive clothes were gone.
Because nobody feared her anymore.
Before she was led away, Lily looked at her.
Vanessa waited for anger.
Lily only said, “We’re safe now.”
