Chapter 12 - Jason Breaks

Jason stared at the prepaid phone receipt.

“I bought office supplies that day.”

Claire placed another record beside it.

Cell tower data showed the phone had been activated near Jason’s apartment.

Then used once.

To call Logan Bennett minutes before the warehouse fire.

Jason shook his head.

“I didn’t know there would be a fire.”

No one moved.

Claire’s voice became dangerously quiet.

“What did you know?”

Jason looked at Diane.

She remained still.

He began breathing faster.

“My mother said Logan was hiding documents inside the records room.”

Diane snapped, “Stop talking.”

“She told me to get him inside so security could confront him.”

Claire felt rage rise through her chest.

“You called my brother and told him someone was trapped.”

Jason’s eyes filled.

“I knew he would go in.”

“You used his decency.”

“I didn’t know the fire had already been set.”

Diane stood.

“He is confused.”

Jason turned toward her.

“You said the smoke system would only scare him.”

Diane’s face hardened.

That was enough.

The conference room had audio recording for board meetings.
