Diane Mercer had a nephew named Logan Mercer.
He was twenty-nine and lived in New York.
He had never worked a single day at Bennett Freight.
Yet a draft ownership agreement granted him fifty-one percent of the company after Robert’s retirement.
Claire stared at the document.
The arrangement made no sense.
Why would her father transfer control of a company built by three generations of Bennetts to Diane’s nephew?
The signature page was missing.
Claire searched the corporate archive.
Someone had removed the original.
When she confronted Jason, he smiled.
“You were gone a long time.”
“That doesn’t answer my question.”
“Your father understands loyalty better than you do.”
Claire stepped closer.
“My brother died in this company.”
“And my family kept it alive afterward.”
Bennett Freight had not needed saving before Diane arrived.
Its debt had increased under her management.
Profitable routes had been sold.
Mercer-owned vendors received inflated contracts.
Jason leaned against Claire’s desk.
“Maybe you should go back to playing soldier.”
Claire’s expression went still.
“Maybe you should prepare for an audit.”
