Chapter 6 - The Woman Behind the Board

Diane Mercer entered Bennett Freight twenty years earlier as an outside investor.
She was polished, wealthy, and relentless.
Robert trusted her because she had helped secure emergency financing after a recession.
What no one knew was that Diane had structured the loan through companies she secretly controlled.
Bennett Freight paid her interest.
Then paid consulting fees to her firms.
Then guaranteed loans for businesses owned by her relatives.
Every time the company weakened, Diane gained more leverage.
She encouraged Robert to believe only she could keep the doors open.
She isolated him from long-term employees.
She removed accountants who questioned invoices.
She praised Jason in public and belittled Robert in private.
Claire saw the pattern immediately.
It was not partnership.
It was capture.
But Robert defended Diane.
“She stood by us when the banks wouldn’t.”
“She profited from our desperation.”
“You don’t understand what those years were like.”
Claire looked at her father’s tired face.
“Then show me the agreement you signed.”
Robert refused.
The next morning, Claire found her office lock changed.
Jason claimed it was a security update.
She called a locksmith and entered anyway.
Her authority came from her ownership shares, not Jason’s permission.

Inside, someone had searched her desk.
👉 Diane knew Claire was getting close—and the missing agreement was important enough to risk openly intimidating the owner’s daughter.
