Chapter 4 - The Widow Without a Marriage

Jason had once been Claire’s fiancé.
They met when she was thirty and stationed temporarily near Dallas.
He was charming then.
Attentive.
He said he admired her discipline.
He proposed after eleven months.
But once the ring was on her finger, his admiration changed.
He complained about her deployments.
He resented saluting soldiers who greeted her by rank.
He wanted her to leave the Army and join Bennett Freight beneath him.
When Claire refused, he accused her of choosing ambition over love.
The engagement ended quietly.
Six months later, Jason began working for Robert.
Diane told everyone Claire had broken her son’s heart.
Jason married someone else, divorced within a year, and returned to the company with even more power.
He acted as though Claire’s absence had proven he deserved her inheritance.
After Logan’s death, his arrogance became open.
He moved into Logan’s office.
He removed the Bennett family photographs.
He ordered employees to call him acting president.
Robert allowed it.
Claire could not understand why.
Until she found a confidential board memo naming Jason’s cousin, not Jason, as the future majority owner.
The cousin’s name was Logan Mercer.
