Chapter 7 - The Warehouse Fire
Claire reopened Logan Bennett’s warehouse fire report.
The electrical explanation had always felt too clean.
The fire began in a records storage area.
Only one section was destroyed.
Route 47 manifests.
Mercer vendor invoices.
And archived board agreements.
The security cameras had failed twenty minutes before the fire.
The technician who serviced them worked for a company owned by Jason’s college roommate.
Claire contacted the fire investigator.
He admitted he had questioned the origin.
But Bennett Freight’s attorneys pressured him to close the case quickly.
“Whose attorney?”
“Diane Mercer’s office handled everything.”
Claire’s hands went cold.
“Did my father know?”
“I assumed he did.”
Claire did not.
She requested Logan’s autopsy file.
He had died from smoke inhalation after entering the records room.
Witnesses said he ran inside because he believed a night cleaner was trapped.
There had been no cleaner scheduled.
Someone had called Logan and told him a person was inside.
The caller used a prepaid phone.
