Three days after the funeral, Claire received an automated email from Logan’s private company account.
It had been scheduled before his death.
The message contained only six words.
Check Route 47 before Dad signs.
Attached was a freight manifest.
Route 47 transported industrial equipment from Texas to a military contractor in Arizona.
On paper, every shipment arrived.
But the weights did not match.
Some trucks left Dallas carrying forty thousand pounds.
They reached Arizona recorded at thirty-two thousand.
Eight thousand pounds disappeared in transit.
Again and again.
Claire reviewed the fuel logs.
Drivers had made unexplained stops at a Mercer-owned storage facility outside El Paso.
The warehouse was not listed in Bennett Freight’s authorized network.
When Claire asked Robert about it, he became defensive.
“Logan was under enormous pressure.”
“Was he investigating Route 47?”
“He was confused.”
“Logan was never careless.”
Robert ended the conversation.
That night, Claire accessed public company filings.
She discovered Bennett Freight had guaranteed several private loans for Mercer Logistics.
The guarantees carried Robert’s signature.
