Chapter 2 - The Captain Comes Home

Claire had not planned to return to Dallas.

For sixteen years, the Army had been the one place where hard work mattered more than family politics.

She became a logistics officer.

Then a captain.

She managed supply chains across hostile regions where one missing shipment could cost lives.

Bennett Freight had taught her the basics.

The Army taught her what responsibility truly meant.

Her younger brother, Logan, had stayed behind and worked inside the family company.

Jason Mercer became Logan’s closest friend.

Diane Mercer, Jason’s mother, joined the executive board after investing in a struggling division.

Robert called it a temporary partnership.

It never felt temporary.

Diane slowly filled senior positions with people loyal to her.

Jason became vice president of operations despite having little freight experience.

Claire warned her father.

Robert dismissed her concerns.

“Jason understands business.”

Then Logan died in a warehouse fire.

The official report blamed faulty electrical wiring.

Claire returned for the funeral.

Within two months, Jason began telling employees that Logan had named him as his successor.

Robert did not deny it.
