Chapter 10 - The Secret Phrase
Rebecca silenced the call.
“What word?”
Lily covered her ears.
“I don’t want to say.”
“You don’t have to.”
Claire arranged for a trauma-informed child advocate to speak with Lily.
The advocate, Rachel Kim, used drawings and toys instead of direct pressure.
Lily eventually explained that Derek practiced “court games.”
He asked questions.
If she gave the wrong answer, he said the phrase:
Remember the basement.
There was no basement in their house.
The phrase referred to Mason’s gym storage room.
Derek had once left Lily there alone for twenty minutes after she refused to say Rebecca frightened her.
The room was dark.
A heavy door locked from outside.
Afterward, Derek used the phrase whenever he wanted immediate obedience.
Rebecca listened from another room.
Her eyes filled, but her voice stayed level.
“Did he hurt her?”
“Not physically in the incident she described,” Rachel said. “But the threat and confinement were enough to create a fear response.”
Rebecca’s fury became almost unbearable.
Derek had turned memory into a weapon.
Claire prepared a motion preventing either parent from directly questioning Lily in court.
Then another problem emerged.
Dr. Mercer had submitted a written opinion supporting Derek.
He claimed Rebecca showed traits associated with aggression and emotional detachment.
He had never met her.
His report cited video clips supplied by Derek.
One showed Rebecca speaking sharply in uniform.
Another showed Lily crying as Rebecca left for duty.
The clips were real.
But stripped of context.
In the full videos, Rebecca was directing movers during a storm.
Lily was crying because Derek had told her Rebecca might die overseas.
Derek had built lies from fragments of truth.
Rachel warned them.
“He may use the trigger phrase if he gets near Lily before the hearing.”
Rebecca looked toward the locked door.
“Then he doesn’t get near her.”
