Chapter 12 - The Server in Mason’s Gym
The memory card contained a network address linked to Mason’s gym.
The hidden cameras did not store everything inside the house.
They uploaded recordings to a server in the gym office.
Claire obtained a preservation order before Derek or Mason could erase it.
A forensic technician copied the system.
The archive contained hundreds of hours.
Most were ordinary family moments.
But Derek had organized selected clips into folders.
REBECCA ANGER.
LILY FEAR.
MILITARY INSTABILITY.
Each folder contained edited fragments.
Beside them were the full original recordings.
The originals destroyed Derek’s narrative.
In one edited clip, Rebecca appeared to shout at Lily.
The full version showed her calling across the yard because a car was backing toward the child.
In another, Rebecca held Lily’s arm firmly.
The full recording showed Lily nearly touching a hot stove.
Derek had transformed protection into aggression.
Then the technician found a private folder labeled PHASE TWO.
Inside were recordings of Derek and Mason rehearsing court testimony.
Mason practiced saying Rebecca shoved him without warning.
Derek practiced crying.
They discussed placing divorce papers where Rebecca would find them and provoking her while the cameras recorded.
Then came a video neither man expected had saved.
Derek sat alone at the dining table.
He said into the camera, “Once Rebecca loses custody, I control the military benefits, the house, and Lily’s trust.”
Rebecca stared at Claire.
“What trust?”
Claire searched the documents.
Rebecca’s late father had left Lily a substantial education fund.
Derek could not access it while Rebecca remained primary trustee.
But if Rebecca lost custody and was declared unfit, Derek intended to seek control.
The betrayal was financial as well as personal.
Then another person entered the video.
