Chapter 14 - The Hearing Derek Thought He Controlled

The courtroom was closed to the public because Lily was a minor.

Rebecca wore a simple navy suit instead of her uniform.

Derek arrived holding a folder and wearing an expression of wounded concern.

Mason sat behind him.

Dr. Mercer waited as an expert witness.

Derek’s attorney began by describing Rebecca as an absent military parent with uncontrolled anger.

Rebecca remained still.

Then Derek testified.

He claimed Rebecca returned unexpectedly, frightened Lily, attacked him, and fled with the child.

“Did you ever install hidden cameras?” his attorney asked.

“For security.”

“Did you manipulate the footage?”

“Never.”

Claire stood.

She played Derek’s kitchen statement.

“She’ll lose our daughter.”

His face changed.

Then came the recording of Mason discussing the provocation.

Once she touches me, we call it assault.

The judge looked toward Mason.

He lowered his eyes.

Claire displayed the forged court order Derek had brought to Anne’s house.

Derek blamed Mason.

Mason immediately blamed Derek.

Their alliance shattered in front of the court.

Then Claire presented the full camera archive beside Derek’s edited clips.

Each accusation collapsed under context.

Finally, Dr. Mercer took the stand.

He claimed his report reflected professional judgment.

Claire played the kitchen meeting.

Mercer’s own voice instructed Derek to create “observable behavior.”

The judge removed her glasses.

“Did you meet Lieutenant Colonel Hale before diagnosing her traits?”

“No.”

“Did you interview the child?”

“No.”

“Did you disclose your private meeting with Mr. Hale?”

Mercer could not answer.

Derek’s confidence vanished.

Then the judge requested Lily’s advocate.

Rachel did not bring Lily into the courtroom.

She submitted a protected interview.

One sentence silenced everyone.
