Chapter 9 - The Trap in the Backyard
Rebecca replayed the recording.
Mason and Derek were speaking in the kitchen the night she returned.
Mason said, “She’ll go military on you if you grab the kid.”
Derek answered, “That’s the point.”
They planned the confrontation step by step.
Derek would corner Rebecca near the laundry room.
Mason would block the exit.
If Rebecca pushed either man while protecting Lily, the hidden camera would capture only the physical contact.
They would remove the earlier footage showing provocation.
Then Derek would file for emergency custody.
Rebecca thought about the backyard.
Derek grabbing her shoulder.
Mason rushing to the gate.
They had begun the plan.
But Rebecca’s phone changed everything.
Her open recording captured Derek’s approach, his grip, and her controlled release.
She had not struck him.
She had created distance and protected Lily.
Claire watched the video.
“This is why he stopped when you raised the phone.”
“He realized he didn’t control the angle.”
Rebecca’s military composure had saved her.
But she knew Derek would adapt.
Manipulative people did not stop when exposed.
They changed stories.
That afternoon, Derek filed for emergency custody anyway.
His petition described Rebecca as armed, aggressive, traumatized by military service, and emotionally detached from Lily.
He included photographs of bruises on his shoulder.
Rebecca remembered exactly how she broke his grip.
The bruises were in the wrong location.
“They’re manufactured,” she said.
Claire agreed.
The court scheduled an emergency hearing in forty-eight hours.
Until then, neither parent could remove Lily from the county.
Derek immediately contacted Rebecca.
LET ME SEE MY DAUGHTER OR I’LL TELL THE COURT YOU ABDUCTED HER.
Rebecca did not respond.
Then Lily’s tablet rang.
Derek had bypassed Rebecca and called the child directly.
Lily stared at the screen in terror.
“Don’t answer,” she whispered.
Rebecca looked at her.
“Why?”
