Chapter 16 - The Threat in the Hallway
Rebecca walked toward the elevator with Claire.
Derek stepped from an alcove.
Mason was nowhere near him now.
His confidence had become rage.
“You think this is over?”
Rebecca kept walking.
Derek moved beside her.
“Lily will hate you when she understands what you did.”
Rebecca’s phone recorded inside her hand.
“What did I do?”
“You destroyed her family.”
“You did that when you used her fear.”
His nostrils flared.
“You won’t always have people watching.”
Rebecca stopped.
The hallway camera pointed directly toward them.
“There are always more witnesses than manipulators expect.”
Derek leaned closer.
“You leave for another assignment, and I’ll make sure she remembers who stayed.”
Rebecca looked into his eyes.
“I am not leaving her with you again.”
He smiled coldly.
“You don’t control that.”
“No,” she said. “The court does.”
Derek’s smile vanished.
A court officer approached.
He stepped away.
Later, Claire listened to the recording.
“That threat matters.”
Rebecca nodded.
But she was more concerned about Lily.
The child had begun waking at night and checking doors.
She hid under tables whenever a man raised his voice on television.
Rachel explained that recovery would take time.
“Safety must become predictable,” she said.
Rebecca requested temporary reassignment closer to home.
Her command approved a family hardship accommodation while the case continued.
Derek immediately claimed Rebecca was using military influence.
But official records showed the request followed standard procedure.
His accusations were losing force.
Then Mason contacted Claire.
He wanted immunity from Derek’s civil claims in exchange for testimony.
Claire refused to promise anything.
But Mason provided the missing fifth camera.
He had kept it as insurance.
