Chapter 17 - The Custody He Never Wanted
The office recording began three months before Rebecca returned.
Mason asked why Derek wanted full custody.
Derek laughed.
“I don’t.”
“Then why are we doing this?”
“Because Rebecca won’t give me the house, and Lily’s trust stays locked unless I become controlling parent.”
Mason looked uneasy.
“What happens to the kid?”
“My mother can take her.”
“Does your mother know?”
“She will.”
Derek poured himself a drink.
“Once Rebecca is declared unstable, she’ll settle. Officers hate public scandal.”
Rebecca watched without blinking.
Derek had used Lily as leverage.
Every frightened interview.
Every hidden camera.
Every dark-room threat.
Not because he wanted to raise her.
Because he wanted assets and control.
The video continued.
Mason asked what would happen if Lily refused to cooperate.
Derek answered, “Children learn.”
Claire stopped the footage.
Rebecca left the room and stood alone in the hallway.
For weeks, she had contained her emotions because Lily needed steadiness.
Now her hands shook.
Not from fear.
From grief.
She had married a man who viewed their child as a legal instrument.
Lily found her there.
“Mom?”
Rebecca knelt.
Lily studied her face.
“Are you sad?”
“Yes.”
“Because of Daddy?”
“Because you deserved better.”
Lily wrapped both arms around her neck.
“You came home.”
Rebecca held her carefully.
“I should have seen sooner.”
“He was nice when you were home.”
The sentence explained everything.
Derek had built two versions of himself.
One for witnesses.
One for the child left alone with him.
Rebecca pressed her cheek against Lily’s curls.
“You never have to protect me again.”
Lily whispered, “But I did good?”
Rebecca pulled back.
