Chapter 15 - The Question Rebecca Could Not Avoid

Derek’s attorney changed strategy.

He stopped defending the cameras.

Instead, he attacked Rebecca’s absences.

“How many nights were you away during the last year?”

Rebecca answered honestly.

“How many school events did you miss?”

“Two.”

“How many times did Lily cry before you deployed?”

Rebecca’s jaw tightened.

“Several.”

“Would you agree your service caused emotional distress?”

Rebecca looked toward the judge.

“My absences were difficult for my daughter.”

Derek leaned back, sensing an opening.

Then Rebecca continued.

“But difficulty is not abuse. Service is not abandonment. And a child’s sadness should never be manufactured into evidence against the parent she misses.”

Her attorney displayed messages Rebecca sent Lily every day she was away.

Videos.

Bedtime stories.

Recorded birthday greetings.

A calendar showing every scheduled call Derek claimed had failed because Rebecca was unavailable.

Phone records showed something different.

Derek had blocked seven of the calls.

He later told Lily her mother had forgotten.

Rebecca felt the betrayal physically.

She had blamed weak connections.

Training delays.

Time zones.

Derek had watched Lily cry beside a silent phone he had deliberately disconnected.

The judge asked Derek why.

He said he was protecting Lily from disappointment.

Rebecca’s voice remained calm.

“You created the disappointment.”

Derek looked at her with open hatred.

“You always came home and became the hero.”

Rebecca finally understood his resentment.

He did not merely want the trust fund.

He wanted Lily’s loyalty.

He believed love was a competition he had to win.

The judge ordered a temporary protective arrangement pending a full investigation.

Lily would remain with Rebecca.

Derek’s contact would be supervised.

Derek stood abruptly.

“This is because she wears medals.”

The judge looked at him.

“No. It is because your own recordings show deliberate coercion.”

👉 Outside the courtroom, Derek abandoned his charming mask and whispered a threat only Rebecca’s phone captured.
