Chapter 2 - The Camera Under the Cabinet

Rebecca backed toward the sidewalk without lowering her phone.
Lily clung to the back of her uniform.
Mason blocked the gate but did not advance.
“Move,” Rebecca said.
Derek lifted both hands.
“You’re misunderstanding this.”
“I heard you say I would lose Lily.”
“You were spying on a private conversation.”
“In my own house?”
Mason glanced toward Derek.
That single look told Rebecca they had not expected her home until the following morning.
Her deployment exercise had ended early.
Derek had received no warning.
“Mom,” Lily whispered, “there are more cameras.”
Rebecca’s eyes remained on Derek.
“Where?”
“My room.”
Derek stepped forward.
Rebecca raised her palm.
“Stay there.”
“She’s confused,” he said. “You’ve been gone too long.”
Lily’s fingers tightened around Rebecca’s sleeve.
“I’m not confused.”
The child sounded frightened, but certain.
Derek’s jaw clenched.
Rebecca had seen that expression only twice during their marriage.
Both times, he believed he was losing control.
A neighbor opened a window across the street.
Mason noticed and stepped away from the gate.
Rebecca guided Lily through.
Derek called after them.
“You cannot take her from the house without my permission.”
Rebecca turned.
“She just begged me to hide from you.”
“That proves nothing.”
“No,” Rebecca said. “But your camera might.”
Derek’s face changed again.
Not guilt.
Calculation.
Rebecca led Lily toward her car.
Then her phone vibrated.
A message from Derek appeared.
COME BACK INSIDE. WE CAN EXPLAIN EVERYTHING.
Before Rebecca could respond, Lily reached into her pajama pocket and handed her a tiny black memory card.
“I took this from Daddy’s desk.”
Rebecca stared at it.
“What’s on it?”
Lily looked toward the house.
May you like
“He said it would make everybody think you hurt me.”
👉 Rebecca had recorded Derek’s words—but the memory card contained the evidence he intended to use against her.
