Chapter 19 - The House Without Hidden Eyes
Rebecca refused to keep the house unchanged.
Every hidden camera was removed.
Every wall opening was repaired.
Lily chose the new paint color for her bedroom.
Soft yellow.
The toy shelf was replaced with an open bookcase that had no hidden compartments.
Rebecca invited Lily to inspect every smoke detector and cabinet.
“No secret cameras?” Lily asked.
“No secret cameras.”
“What about the door camera?”
“That one stays outside, and you know where it is.”
Lily nodded.
Rachel continued working with her.
Slowly, the nightmares became less frequent.
Lily stopped hiding when the garage door opened.
She stopped whispering every time she mentioned Derek.
Rebecca also entered counseling.
Not because Derek’s accusations were true.
Because betrayal had consequences even for disciplined people.
She learned that military composure could protect her during crisis but should not force her to carry pain alone.
Anne became a steady presence.
Rebecca’s command supported her reassignment.
For the first time in years, Rebecca built a life that did not require Derek’s approval.
One evening, Lily found the decorated dress uniform hanging in Rebecca’s room.
“Are you going away?”
Rebecca knelt beside her.
“Not tonight.”
“Someday?”
“Yes. My job may require travel again.”
Lily’s face tightened.
Rebecca did not make an impossible promise.
Instead, she showed her the new plan.
Daily calls.
Emergency contacts.
Anne’s house.
Rachel’s number.
A written schedule Lily could hold.
“And nobody can turn off the phone?” Lily asked.
“Nobody.”
Lily touched one of Rebecca’s medals.
“Daddy said these mattered more than me.”
Rebecca covered her daughter’s hand.
“They represent my service. You are my child. Those things were never competing.”
Lily leaned against her.
For the first time, the uniform no longer reminded her of abandonment.
