Chapter 6 - The Red Sticker
Derek called the police and accused Rebecca of breaking into his private office.
Claire calmly explained that Rebecca co-owned the home and had entered with a licensed investigator.
Derek pointed toward the missing camera.
“She removed my property.”
“It was preserved and documented,” Claire said.
“It was a security device.”
“In a child’s bedroom?”
Derek’s composure slipped.
“For medical observation.”
Rebecca stared at him.
“Lily has no condition requiring surveillance.”
“She has anxiety because of you.”
The cruelty of the sentence landed hard.
Rebecca did not react.
That was what Derek wanted.
He wanted anger on camera.
Instead, she opened her phone and began recording openly.
“Say that again.”
Derek looked at the screen.
His confidence weakened.
Then Lily called from Anne’s phone.
Rebecca answered on speaker.
“Mom, did you find the red sticker?”
Derek froze.
“What sticker?” Rebecca asked.
“The one Daddy put on the camera.”
The investigator checked the evidence photograph.
A small red inventory sticker was visible on the device.
Lily continued.
“Daddy told Uncle Mason if you found the camera, they’d say you planted it.”
The room went silent.
Derek reached for the phone.
Rebecca stepped back.
“Lily, when did he say that?”
“Last night.”
“Where were you?”
“Behind the kitchen door.”
Derek’s face darkened.
“She misunderstands adult conversations.”
Claire looked directly at him.
“Then you will have no objection to the full recording being examined.”
Derek said nothing.
Rebecca understood the red sticker.
Derek had marked the camera so he and Mason could later identify it as one Rebecca supposedly purchased and planted.
But Lily had heard the setup.
The child had not merely stolen a memory card.
She had been collecting clues.
