Chapter 10 - The Threat Beneath the Table
During a recess, Gavin requested permission to speak privately with Lily.
The judge refused.
He then asked to pass her a written note.
Karen intercepted it.
The note said:
TELL THEM THE PHONE IS FAKE OR YOU WILL NEVER SEE GRANDMA AGAIN.
Lily’s paternal grandmother, Margaret, was the one adult from Gavin’s family she trusted.
Gavin had been using access to her as leverage.
Karen showed the note to Rachel and Judge Avery.
Gavin claimed it was misunderstood.
“I was telling her not to lie.”
“You threatened to remove a family relationship,” Avery said.
“I’m her father.”
“That does not authorize coercion.”
Gavin’s panic sharpened.
He accused Claire of turning Lily against him.
Claire finally spoke.
“I have not asked her to choose.”
“You don’t have to. You walk into rooms wearing medals and everyone bows.”
“No one is bowing.”
“The judge came off the bench.”
“Because he believed I died saving him.”
Gavin’s face twisted.
“There. You always need to be the hero.”
Claire saw the truth beneath his anger.
Her service had not merely inconvenienced him.
It made him feel small.
Every medal felt like an accusation.
Every story of courage weakened the version of Claire he wanted Lily to believe.
Lily looked at him.
“Mom never told me she was a hero.”
Gavin turned toward her.
“She made sure everyone else did.”
“No,” Lily said. “You made sure I thought she was bad.”
The judge ordered Gavin removed from the room for the remainder of the evidence review.
As deputies approached, he lowered his voice.
“Lily, remember what happens when you betray family.”
The child froze.
Claire stepped between them.
“What happens?”
Gavin did not answer.
But Lily’s hand moved toward her old phone.
“There’s a video,” she whispered. “From the basement.”
Claire’s face changed.
They had no basement.
