Chapter 16 - Gavin’s Last Performance

Gavin stood for his final statement.

He cried.

Perfectly controlled tears moved down his face.

“I loved my daughter enough to stay.”

Claire did not react.

“I packed lunches. I attended conferences. I sat beside her when she was sick.”

All of that was true.

That was what made the betrayal harder.

Gavin had performed real acts of parenting while quietly turning Lily against her mother.

He continued.

“Claire left. Again and again. Now she returns wearing medals and everyone forgets who raised this child.”

Judge Porter listened.

Then she asked, “Why did you prevent Claire’s calls?”

Gavin said Lily needed consistency.

“Why did you tell Lily her mother’s scar came from an assault?”

“I believed Claire was unstable.”

“Based on what medical diagnosis?”

He had none.

“Why did you forge Lily’s affidavit?”

“I did not.”

The school form proved otherwise.

“Why did you pay Dr. Crane?”

“For advice.”

“Why did you create edited footage?”

“To show patterns.”

“Why did you attempt to erase the phone?”

Gavin stopped.

His performance broke.

He pointed at Claire.

“Because she always wins!”

The room went silent.

Gavin’s breathing grew rough.

“She wins the medals. She wins respect. She walks into a room and people look at her like she matters more.”

Claire finally looked at him.

“This was never a competition.”

“It was to you.”

“No. It was to you.”

Gavin turned toward Lily.

“I stayed.”

Lily’s eyes filled.

“You stayed and made me scared.”

The words landed harder than every recording.

Gavin sat down.

His face emptied.

Judge Porter called a recess before ruling.

Claire and Lily waited in a private room.

Lily asked, “Will he hate me now?”

Claire knelt.

“His feelings are not your responsibility.”

“Were they ever?”

“No.”

Lily began crying.

Not wildly.

Quietly.
