Chapter 8 - The Messages Gavin Deleted
The technician recovered the first set of files from Lily’s old phone.
Most were voice messages Claire had sent during deployments.
She read bedtime stories.
Described sunsets.
Asked about school projects.
Promised specific call times.
Lily had replied with short recordings.
I miss you.
Daddy says you’re busy.
Are you coming home for my concert?
Claire remembered calling for that concert.
Gavin said Lily had gone to bed.
The phone records showed Claire called six times.
The old phone contained a deleted recording made later that night.
Gavin’s voice said, “Your mother had more important things to do.”
Lily replied, “She promised.”
“Soldiers make promises they don’t keep.”
Claire’s eyes closed.
Gavin had blocked her calls, then used the silence as proof she did not care.
More files appeared.
Lily crying after Gavin told her Claire might choose another deployment permanently.
Lily asking whether military mothers loved their jobs more than children.
Gavin never comforted her.
He positioned the phone closer.
The recordings were not memories.
They were evidence he manufactured.
Then came one clip of Gavin giving instructions.
“When someone asks why you’re afraid, say Mommy gets a look in her eyes.”
Lily’s small voice answered, “But she doesn’t.”
Gavin paused.
“Say it anyway.”
“No.”
“You want to stay with me, don’t you?”
Lily began crying.
The courtroom stopped breathing.
Gavin’s attorney requested a break.
Judge Avery denied it.
The technician continued.
Mason entered the recording.
“Don’t force it. Scared kids need time.”
Gavin answered, “The hearing is in two weeks.”
The clip ended.
Lily buried her face against Karen’s shoulder.
Claire wanted to cross the room.
But she waited until Karen nodded.
Then she moved beside her daughter.
“I’m sorry,” Lily whispered.
Claire took her hand.
“You have nothing to apologize for.”
Gavin looked toward them.
His face showed no guilt.
