Chapter 14 - Mason Changes Sides
Mason requested a meeting with prosecutors and the family court investigator.
He wanted to cooperate.
Not because he felt sudden compassion.
Because Gavin had blamed every illegal act on him.
Mason provided access codes, payment records, and the full camera archive.
He admitted installing the devices.
He admitted creating edited clips.
He admitted locking the basement door.
But he claimed Gavin designed the plan.
Rachel did not excuse him.
“Following instructions does not erase your choices.”
Mason lowered his head.
Still, his evidence confirmed the timeline.
He also revealed Gavin’s backup plan.
If Claire gained custody, Gavin intended to release edited videos online.
He had prepared anonymous accounts portraying her as a violent officer protected by the Army.
The campaign was scheduled to launch the morning after the final ruling.
Investigators secured the files before publication.
One draft post used a photograph of Claire’s scar beside the words:
WHAT DID THE ARMY HIDE?
Lily saw the image accidentally while Rachel reviewed evidence.
Her face tightened.
“Dad made your scar ugly.”
Claire sat beside her.
“A scar is not ugly.”
“He made it look scary.”
“He needed you to fear what it represented.”
“What does it represent?”
Claire touched the pale line.
“That I survived.”
Lily reached up carefully.
“Does it hurt?”
“Not anymore.”
Gavin had transformed Claire’s survival into a symbol of danger.
Now Lily saw it differently.
The scar did not prove her mother was broken.
It proved she returned.
Mason’s final evidence was a voice message Gavin recorded after the first hearing.
“I don’t care what happens to Lily,” he said. “I care that Claire doesn’t win.”
Claire listened once.
Then turned it off.
The custody fight had never truly been about parenting.
