Chapter 4 - The Witness Who Knew Too Much

Mason sat in the second row behind Gavin’s legal team.

He had testified earlier that Claire was emotionally cold, controlling, and dangerous after deployments.

Now every face in the courtroom turned toward him.

Mason stood.

“That message is being misunderstood.”

Judge Avery ordered him to remain.

Karen asked whether Mason had access to Gavin’s cloud account.

“No.”

Gavin interrupted.

“He helps with company technology.”

His attorney closed his eyes.

Claire saw the mistake immediately.

Gavin had admitted access after Mason denied it.

The judge ordered both phones preserved.

Mason’s confidence began to crack.

Lily moved closer to Claire.

“He was there when Dad recorded me.”

Claire looked down.

“When?”

“In the kitchen. He told me crying looked honest.”

Mason heard her.

“That is a lie.”

Claire did not raise her voice.

“You just called a frightened child a liar in open court.”

The judge’s expression hardened.

Mason sat down.

Karen requested a private child interview before the phone was opened.

Judge Avery agreed.

But Gavin’s attorney renewed the recusal motion.

The courtroom paused while Judge Avery disclosed what he knew.

Sixteen years earlier, before becoming a judge, he had served as a federal prosecutor embedded with a military investigative team overseas.

A convoy was attacked along a supply route known as Route Scarlet.

Claire, then a young captain, had led survivors through the ambush.

Avery had been among them.

Official reports listed Claire as missing after she returned into the danger zone for two soldiers.

“I was later informed she had died,” he said.

Claire’s jaw tightened.

She had survived.

But parts of the operation were classified, and several names had been withheld.

Avery looked toward her scar.

“I owe Captain Whitmore my life. That does not permit me to favor her.”

Gavin stood again.

“It absolutely does.”

Claire finally faced him.

“You didn’t know any of this.”

“No,” he snapped. “Because you hide everything.”

Lily looked between them.

Then she whispered, “Dad told me the scar came from when Mom lost control.”

👉 Lily had been taught a false story about Claire’s injury—and the phone contained the moment Gavin invented it.
