Chapter 6 - The Soldier Claire Saved

Major Daniel Reyes had retired three years earlier.

Claire had not spoken to him in almost a decade.

She called from the courthouse hallway.

He answered on the second ring.

“Claire?”

“I need help.”

Her voice was steady, but Daniel heard what others missed.

“What happened?”

She explained the custody case, Gavin’s allegations, and Lily’s belief that Claire’s scar came from violence.

Daniel became silent.

“That scar happened when the vehicle exploded.”

“I know.”

“You pulled Avery out.”

“I need someone else to say it.”

Daniel did not hesitate.

“I’ll testify.”

He lived four hours away.

Rachel arranged a remote appearance for the following morning.

Judge Avery reviewed the recusal arguments and issued a temporary decision.

He would remain only long enough to preserve evidence and transfer the case to another judge if necessary.

Gavin smiled.

He believed he had forced Avery out.

But Avery added one condition.

“All digital evidence, financial records, and witness devices will be preserved before transfer.”

Gavin’s smile disappeared.

Mason leaned toward him.

The deputies immediately separated them.

Outside, Lily sat beside Claire.

“Was Dad lying about your scar?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I told you the part I was allowed to tell.”

“That you helped people.”

“Yes.”

Lily looked ashamed.

“I thought maybe you lied because it was bad.”

Claire knelt in front of her.

“You were given a story by someone you trusted. Believing it does not make you wrong.”

Lily’s eyes filled.

“Did you hurt anyone?”

Claire answered carefully.

“I protected people during an attack. Some things were frightening. But I never attacked someone because I lost control.”

Lily touched the edge of Claire’s sleeve.

“Did the judge really think you died?”

“Yes.”

“Did Dad know?”

“No.”

Lily looked back toward the courtroom.

“Then why did he tell me he knew everything about you?”

👉 Gavin’s power over Lily depended on pretending he knew Claire’s secrets—but his own secrets were beginning to surface.
