Chapter 3 - The Remote Wipe
The guardian ad litem, Karen Doyle, immediately called the court’s digital evidence technician.
The phone remained sealed while the technician placed the bag inside a signal-blocking container.
Gavin watched every movement.
His breathing became shallow.
Claire looked at him.
“You expected the phone to disappear.”
He smiled without warmth.
“You always think everything is a military operation.”
Lily whispered, “He made me connect it to his account.”
Karen knelt beside her.
“Did your father know you kept the phone?”
Lily nodded.
“He thought it broke.”
The device was four years old.
Claire had given it to Lily before a long overseas assignment so they could exchange recorded messages.
After Claire returned, Gavin claimed the phone had stopped working.
He replaced it and took the old one away.
Lily later found it hidden inside a box in his office.
“Why did you take it?” Claire asked.
Lily’s eyes filled.
“Because he told me not to listen to your old messages.”
Gavin leaned forward.
“She stole private property.”
Judge Avery struck the bench with his hand.
“You will not address the child.”
The technician returned.
A remote deletion request had reached the account minutes earlier.
It failed because the phone had been isolated.
Karen asked who had access to Gavin’s account.
Gavin said no one.
Then his attorney received a message and quietly showed it to him.
Gavin’s face changed.
Claire recognized the look.
Someone had failed him.
Judge Avery noticed too.
“Mr. Whitmore, surrender your current phone.”
Gavin shook his head.
“It contains privileged communication.”
“Then it will be preserved pending review.”
When a deputy approached, Gavin locked the screen.
But a message remained visible for one second.
MASON: WIPE FAILED. WHAT NOW?
Claire stared at the name.
Mason Cole was Gavin’s business partner.
