Chapter 15 - The Final Hearing Begins
Judge Elaine Porter entered a courtroom emptied of spectators.
Only essential parties remained.
Claire wore a dark civilian suit.
She did not want her rank to dominate the room.
Gavin wore another expensive suit, but the confidence was gone.
Lily sat beside Karen.
The old phone rested on the evidence table.
Judge Porter began with the central question.
“What arrangement protects Lily’s physical and emotional safety?”
Gavin’s attorney argued that both parents had made mistakes.
Claire’s military absences were emphasized again.
Judge Porter interrupted.
“Absence due to lawful service is not equivalent to coercion.”
Gavin testified.
He claimed fear drove his decisions.
Fear that Claire would take Lily away.
Fear that Lily preferred her mother.
Fear that the court would overlook his role because Claire was decorated.
Rachel asked, “Did fear cause you to lock Lily in a basement?”
Gavin hesitated.
“I was not the one who locked the door.”
“Did you leave her there?”
“Yes.”
“Did you demand a false statement before releasing her?”
“I asked for honesty.”
Rachel played the recording.
Lily’s crying filled the courtroom.
Gavin stared at the table.
Then came his voice.
Say Mommy scares you.
Judge Porter watched him.
“That is not a request for honesty.”
Rachel played the message Mason supplied.
I don’t care what happens to Lily. I care that Claire doesn’t win.
Gavin’s face went pale.
He claimed he spoke in anger.
Rachel nodded.
“Anger often reveals priorities.”
Lily looked toward her father.
He finally looked back.
For one second, his expression softened.
Then he mouthed two words.
Remember family.
Lily’s body stiffened.
Claire moved her chair closer without touching her.
