Chapter 7 - The Photographs on Gavin’s Table

The next morning, Rachel presented photographs recovered from Gavin’s home office.

They showed Claire in uniform at airports, ceremonies, and outside military buildings.

Many had been taken without her knowledge.

Dates and notes appeared on the back.

ABSENT AGAIN.

UNSTABLE AFTER RETURN.

LILY CRIED FOR 22 MINUTES.

Gavin had documented Claire’s absences for years.

But he had ignored every phone call, school visit, and weekend she rearranged to be present.

“He built a collection,” Rachel said. “Not of what happened. Of what he wanted the court to believe happened.”

One photograph showed Claire gripping Gavin’s wrist.

Gavin claimed it captured an assault.

The full sequence told another story.

Lily had been crossing a busy parking lot.

Gavin tried to pull her forward while a car reversed.

Claire stopped him and moved Lily back.

Judge Avery studied the photographs.

“Who took these?”

Mason had.

His company invoices described “family documentation services.”

Gavin had paid him more than thirty thousand dollars.

Mason’s attorney requested that he be excused from further testimony.

The judge denied the request.

Then Major Reyes appeared by video.

He wore no uniform.

Only a plain blue shirt.

He described Route Scarlet.

The blast.

The burning vehicle.

Avery trapped beneath twisted metal.

Claire returning through gunfire after reaching safety.

“She pulled him out,” Reyes said. “Then a fragment struck her head.”

Lily stared at her mother.

Gavin stared at the table.

Reyes continued.

“Captain Whitmore was reported missing because she went back for two more soldiers. She survived after being separated from the convoy overnight.”

Judge Avery’s eyes lowered.

Claire’s face remained controlled.

Reyes finished with one sentence.

“She did not receive that scar because she lost control. She received it because everyone else had run out of time.”

The courtroom fell silent.

Gavin leaned toward his attorney.

“He’s military. Of course he protects her.”

Lily heard him.

This time, she did not look confused.
