Chapter 11 - The Room Beneath Mason’s Warehouse
Mason owned a commercial storage building outside the city.
The basement was not listed on his business insurance records.
Lily had been taken there three times.
Gavin told Claire she was staying with his mother.
Instead, he brought her to a windowless room beneath Mason’s office.
The old phone contained a video Lily accidentally activated from inside her backpack.
The screen was dark.
But the voices were clear.
Gavin told Lily to repeat three sentences.
Mom scares me.
Mom hurts Dad.
I want to live with Daddy.
Lily refused.
Mason locked the door.
She began crying.
Gavin said, “We will come back when you are ready to tell the truth.”
The recording continued for twenty-seven minutes.
Lily called for them.
No one answered.
Then Dr. Crane’s voice appeared outside the door.
“Long enough. Fear becomes unreliable if you push too far.”
The lock opened.
Lily was instructed to look into a camera and speak.
Her voice shook.
“Mom scares me.”
The recording ended.
Claire remained perfectly still.
Her restraint frightened Gavin more than anger would have.
Judge Avery ordered an immediate inspection of the property and preservation of all recordings.
Mason’s attorney attempted to argue the audio lacked context.
Rachel looked at him.
“What context justifies locking a thirteen-year-old child in a dark room until she repeats a false statement?”
Mason lowered his eyes.
Lily began breathing too quickly.
Claire knelt beside her.
“You are here.”
Lily gripped her medals.
“I said it because I wanted the door open.”
“I know.”
“Will the judge think I lied?”
Judge Avery answered from the bench.
“No, Lily. The court understands the difference between a lie and a statement forced through fear.”
Lily looked at him.
Then at Claire.
