Chapter 1 - The Police at Her Door

Three violent knocks shook Clara’s front door hard enough to rattle the brass lock.

She crossed the dark hallway in socks, her messy bun slipping loose, and opened the door only halfway.

Two Columbus police officers stood on the porch.

The older one held a notepad.

“Your husband reported you locked him out.”

For one brief second, Clara looked stunned.

Then every trace of fear disappeared.

“He married someone else last night.”

Officer Daniels stopped writing.

Beside him, Officer Reed shifted toward the doorway.

“We need to verify who owns the house.”

Clara widened her stance and raised one rigid palm before he could cross the threshold.

Then she reached behind the door, grabbed a prepared folder, and snapped it open against her forearm.

“The deed has only my name.”

She held the document against the frame.

Next came her phone.

A photograph showed Ethan outside a Las Vegas wedding chapel in a dark suit, smiling beside a woman in a short white dress.

Below it was his message:

Don’t make this difficult. Rebecca and I will be living in the house when we get back.

Canceled-card alerts followed.

A locksmith invoice.

New keys.

Officer Daniels stared at the screen.

“He didn’t mention any wedding.”

Clara placed the fresh house key beside the deed.

“He left out a lot.”

Daniels slowly closed his notepad.

Reed reached toward his radio.

The complaint no longer looked like a domestic lockout.
